On Oct. 2, 2017, the Utah Department of Workforce Services’ Chief Economist Carrie Mayne received the State Technology Innovator Award for her outstanding efforts in advancing technology policy for the department. The award was given by the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO).
Carrie has worked for the state of Utah for the past 11 years serving as the Bureau of Labor Statistics supervisor, a supervisory role on the economist team, and now serves as the department’s chief economist. She has utilized the best technology available throughout her experience at Workforce Services.
Some of the innovative technology she implemented within her team and the department includes:
- Utah Economic Data Viewer - A search based tool that provides an online directory of Utah businesses, industry employment and wage information, occupational explorer, and a population data tool.
- Local Insights: Detailed economic information on every county in the state, updated regularly.
- Online Reports and Analysis - Digital dashboards providing insight into almost every aspect of the economy, such as women and veterans in the workforce, Equal Employment Opportunity, and industry labor force profiles.
- Economic Data Visualizations - Powerful visualizations providing insights into worker migration, macro indicators and demographics.
In addition to her technology use for industry and regional data, Carrie’s team has embraced using social media as a tool to disseminate data. Her team utilizes YouTube, Facebook Live and Twitter to share economic data to the public. In addition, her team produces the monthly Economy Utah Blog.
The data produced by her team of economists and researchers has become a crucial component in the success of Utah’s Intergenerational Poverty Initiative and other statewide initiatives focusing on workforce development. Congratulations to Carrie and her team for receiving this honor.
