Afterschool Quality Improvement Grant

The Afterschool Quality Improvement Grant is awarded through a competitive RFGA proces open to youth-serving organizations across Utah operating an afterschool program a minimum of 10 hours per week for 32 weeks during the regular school year; serving youth between the ages of 5 to 12 and 13 to 18.

Programs must provide the following: (1) support academic achievement; (2) offer enrichment and recreation opportunities; (3) provide prevention and education programming; (4) collaborate with other public and/or private entities; (5) incorporate parental and/or family involvement; (6) provide appropriate training for staff and volunteers; and (7) adhere to specific quality, safety, data and reporting expectations as designated by DWS - OCC.

Public and private schools, public or private not-for-profit organizations, faith-based organizations, state departments and agencies, units of local governments and Indian tribal governments who operate a school-year afterschool program for youth, ages 5 to 18.

Baby Steps Grant

The Baby Steps Grant is a non-competitive grant available to licensed child care programs that provide all day, year around child care for children under the age of two. The goals of the program are to increase the overall quality of center-based infant/toddler child care and to increase the availability of infant/toddler care. This grant provides centers with funds for furniture, equipment and materials, to make minor improvements to the rooms the children are cared for in as well as to create and/or improve a separate infant/toddler playground for outdoor play. Programs are reimbursed for wages paid to infant/toddler staff while attending specific training classes. Each program is assigned an Infant/Toddler Specialist who works with the caregivers and directors to assist them in reaching higher standards of quality. Participating centers are initially evaluated with the Infant/Toddler Environment Rating Scale—Revised (ITERS-R) and set goals based on the results. Certain benchmarks must be achieved to be eligible to write a competitive proposal for two more years of funding in the Next Steps Grant Program.

Care About Childcare Quality Criteria Grant:

This equipment and materials grant is awarded to fully licensed child care programs that achieve quality criteria that are displayed on the Care About Childcare website for consumers to view. There are over 130 accreditation type quality criteria child care programs can earn. All of the CAC quality criteria exceed child care licensing requirements. Grant award amounts are dependent upon the care type of the program and the number of quality criteria the child care program achieves.

Child Care programs must be fully licensed for 6 months or longer and provide full time care. Programs must also be in substantial compliance with child care licensing regulations. Substantial compliance is defined as an absence of civil money penalties for the previous 6 months. In addition, programs cannot be currently issued a conditional license or be suspended from receiving DWS grants/funds.

CCDF Match Partnerships I & II

A grant opportunity for local public entities and not-for-profit organizations who identify a minimum of $20,000 in qualified expenditures for out-of-school time/afterschool programs serving elementary-age children (5-12). Expenditures are used to draw down additional Federal funding for out-of-school time/afterschool programs. Participating sites are required to collaborate with other public/private entities, incorporate parental/family involvement; provide prevention education; support academic achievement; offer enrichment/recreation opportunities; provide appropriate training for staff and volunteers; and adhere to specific quality, safety, data, and reporting expectations as designated by OCC-DWS.

Child Care Trust Fund Grant This grant opportunity will provide support to non-profit, child care professional development associations to assist them in providing professional development opportunities to child care providers.

Family Provider Start Up Grant

This grant reimburses licensed Family/Home Providers for initial start up costs directly related to becoming licensed. Costs typically reimbursed include fees for business license, inspections, first aid/cpr, smoke detectors, training, etc.

Programs licensed within the previous 12 months as Family/Home providers. There is a limit of two start up grants per lifetime.

High Quality School Readiness Grant Program

The purposes of the Utah School Readiness Initiative are to increase school readiness, improve academic outcomes, and reduce special education remedial costs for economically disadvantaged children. One component of the Initiative is the High Quality School Readiness Grant Program. The Grant Program provides resources to Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and private providers of existing early education programs. These programs must serve 3- and 4-year-old children who are economically disadvantaged.

High School Youth Support Grant

High School afterschool grants are awarded through a competitive RFG process to organizations offering programs to teens during out of school time. Funding is available to support High School Graduation, preparation for post-secondary education, career readiness, healthy relationships and prevention. Programs select two of the following prevention components to focus their program around: Addiction Prevention, Civic Engagement, Financial Literacy, Physical Activity & Nutrition, Self-Concept & Emotional Intelligence, and Violence & Gang Prevention.

Kindergarten Match Partnerships

Kindergarten Match Partnerships is a project created to support School Districts in increasing the quality and access of out-of-school time/afterschool programming. Participating sites are required to collaborate with other public/private entities, incorporate parental/family involvement; provide prevention education; support academic achievement; offer enrichment/recreation opportunities; provide appropriate training for staff and volunteers; and adhere to specific quality, safety, data, and reporting expectations as designated by OCC-DWS. Kindergarten Match Partnerships generate local awareness and support, promote partnerships, encourage collaboration between other out-of-school time/afterschool programs in the community, and allow for creation and expansion of out-of-school time programs for elementary-age children (ages 5-12) throughout the State of Utah.

Next Steps Grant

Programs that reach their goals and get the required end score after participating in the Baby Steps Grant successfully for two years are eligible to apply for the Next Steps Grant. This grant provides additional funding to allow the center to continue on a quality improvement path in their Infant/Toddler Rooms. If the program is awarded a grant, they receive funds as described in the Baby Steps Grant but there are a few additional requirements. There is more emphasis placed on using funds to retain staff or increase continuity of care for the children. There is also a required component for involving, strengthening, and supporting families. Programs can participate for a maximum of two years in this grant and if they complete all contract requirements, they may be eligible to enroll non-competitively for the final step in the process, the Two Year Old Grant.

Professional Development Awards

The Professional Development Award is given annually for Early Childhood Professionals working in Child Care Licensed, full day, full year programs. The award is based on the provider's level on the Career Ladder and how many years that have participated in the Professional Development System.

Program Coach Materials Grant

The program coach materials grant is available to licensed Centers and licensed Family providers that choose to work with a program coach (PC). PC services are available through your local Care About Childcare Agency, PC’s can spend up to 30 hours in your program to help you reach mutually established quality improvement goals. Goals are derived from the Care About Childcare criteria. PC’s can assist you with curriculum ideas, room arrangement, learning centers, demonstrating developmentally appropriate activities with the children and much more. After receiving 20-30 hours of onsite coaching and completing a 10 hour training or homework assignment programs will receive a materials grant worth $400. Please contact your local Care About Childcare agency for additional information and to schedule coaching sessions.

Quality Environment Grants

Quality Environment Grants are offered to child care providers that hold a family or center child care license. Funding levels vary year to year and are not offered every year. All center and family licensed child care providers are notified via post cards and/or email when the grants become available.

Safe Passages 2013

Middle/Junior/High School afterschool grants are awarded through a competitive RFG process to organizations offering programs to teens during out of school time. The teen programs focus on prevention. Programs select three of the following prevention/education components to focus their program around: Pregnancy & STI Prevention, Violence & Gang Prevention, Addiction Prevention, Civic Engagement, Financial Literacy, Education & Career Readiness, Self Concept & Emotional Intelligence, Positive Interpersonal Relationships, and Physical Activity & Nutrition.

School-Age Quality Improvement Grant

The School-Age Quality Improvement Grant is awarded through a competitive RFGA process to private, licensed child care center providers operating school-age afterschool programs a minimum of 15 hours per week and 36 weeks during the regular school year. Centers must be committed to improving the overall quality of their school-age program and provide the following: 1) support academic development; 2) offer enrichment and recreation opportunities; 3) incorporate parental and/or family involvement; 4) provide appropriate and high quality training for school-age staff; and 5) adhere to specific quality, safety, data and reporting expectations as designated by DWS - OCC during the three years of the grant cycle.

STEMLink Afterschool Grant

STEMLink Afterschool Grants are available to develop, implement or enhance Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs during out of school time for youth in middle, junior high and high school. This may include afterschool programming to supplement the school day Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and Work-Based Learning (WBL) activities that are STEM based. Programs also focus on relationship education/pregnancy prevention, and two of the following prevention components: Addiction Prevention, Civic Engagement, Financial Literacy, Physical Activity & Nutrition, Self-Concept & Emotional Intelligence, and Violence & Gang Prevention.

Summer Youth Program Grant

The Summer Youth Program Grant is awarded through a competitive RFGA process for organizations offering high quality summer youth programs. These summer programs support working parents and families by providing safe, age-appropriate, accessible, and affordable high quality programming when school is not in session. Programs must collaborate with other public/private entities, incorporate parental/family involvement; provide prevention/education programming; support academic achievement; offer enrichment/recreation opportunities; provide appropriate training for staff and volunteers; and adhere to specific quality, safety, data, and reporting expectations as designated by DWS - OCC during the three years of the grant cycle.

Two Year Old Grant

Programs that are enrolled in this grant receive the same type of services from an Infant/Toddler Specialist and funding structured very similarly to Baby Steps for their two year old rooms. Again, this is a two year process and programs must work toward quality improvement goals. The Two Year Old Grant will be available beginning October, 2014 to programs not licensed for infants and toddlers but do care for two year olds. Programs will be notified of the opportunity to participate in a ten hour training class that will make them eligible to enroll in the two year old grant, if the director attends all sessions. This class is mandatory in order to participate.

Utah Afterschool Professional Credential

The Utah Afterschool Professional Credential is a voluntary statewide award system for teachers and caregivers working with children ages 5-18 in out-of-school settings. The credential has three levels: Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced; each level consists of 40 hours of training. When a teacher or caregiver obtains 40 hours of professional development in one of the levels they receive a certificate and a financial award.
