On-the-Job-Training (OJT) is customized job related training provided by an
employer in the public, private or nonprofit sector. This training program has
been designed to increase the specific job related skills of participants by
providing them with related work experience specific to a chosen occupation; and
through direct work experience increasing participants potential for future
work opportunities and earnings.
Highlights:
OJT provides reimbursement to the employer of up to
50 percent of the wage rate of the participant for the extraordinary costs of
providing the training and additional supervision related to the training.
Provides the participant knowledge or skills
essential to the full and adequate performance of the job, normally the
highest skill occupations, and which are in high demand in the labor market.
The occupation must not be seasonal, intermittent or
temporary and must not involve payment in the form of a commission, tip or
similar kinds of payments, as the primary source of reimbursement to the OJT
employee/trainee.
Is limited in duration as appropriate to the
occupation for which the participant is being trained taking into account the
content of the training, prior work experience of the participant, and the
service strategy of the participant as appropriate.
OJT training shall be limited to a period not in
excess of that required for the participant to become proficient in the
occupation for which the training is being provided.
An employer can have more that one participant at any
one time.
The employer must provide OJT participants with continued long term
employment with wages, wage increases, benefits and working conditions that
are equal to those provided to regular employees who have worked a similar
length of time and are doing the same type of work.
