Child 0 - 5 Medical

Medicaid program covers children from birth through age 5.

How to Qualify:

Your income must not be more than the Child 0 - 5 income limits.

Child 6 - 18 Medical

Child 6 - 18 Medical covers children from age 6 through the month they turn 19. Children do not have to live with a relative to be covered.

How to Qualify:

Your income must not be more than the Child 6 - 18 income limits.
There is no asset limit.

Child Medically Needy

The Child Medically Needy Program covers children whose household income is more than the Child 0-5 and Child 6-18 income limits and who do not meet the Family Medicaid lack of support requirements. A child is considered deprived of parental support if the child lacks at least one parent's support due to death, absence, incapacity or if one parent in a two parent household is unemployed or employed less than 100 hours per month.

How to Qualify:

Your net income (after deductions like a $90 work allowance and child care expenses have been taken out) must not be more than the Medically Needy Program income limit for your family size.
If your income is above the income limit for the Medically Needy Program, you can spenddown or "buy" Medicaid coverage by paying cash or turning in medical bills that bring your income below the income limit.
Children can either be under 18 or between 18 and 19 if they are in school and will graduate before turning 19.
You must be below the asset limit:
1 person - $2,000
2 people - $3,000
Each additional person add $25

If the children are not living with their parents, the income and assets of the adult household members do not count.

Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

The Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) covers children who are not covered by other health insurance and do not qualify for Medicaid. Click here for more information.

How to Qualify:

Your gross income (before taxes) must not be more than 200% of the Federal Poverty Limit.
The children must be U.S. citizens or legal residents and be under age 19.

State CHIP

Starting January 2024, the state of Utah will be offering a new CHIP benefit for non-citizen children called State CHIP. Children of working families may be eligible if they do not have other health insurance and cannot qualify for Medicaid or traditional CHIP due to citizenship status. How to Qualify:

Your gross income (before taxes) must not be more than 200% of the Federal Poverty Limit.
The children must be Utah resident for at least 180 days and be under age 19.
If living with parent(s), at least one parent must have earned income.
