Workforce Services hires new chief of Veterans Services

SALT LAKE CITY (October 24, 2018) — The Department of Workforce Services has selected Michael Miller from Cedar City, UT as the new chief of Veterans Services. Miller is taking over for Bruce Summers, who will be retiring from the department on January 4, 2019.

Miller served just under 30 years in the United States Army and Utah National Guard. He was deployed twice, one of which was to Ramadi, Iraq. Miller ended his career with the military after serving five years as the Command Sergeant Major, a senior enlisted leader with the Utah National Guard. In addition, he was a senior operations sergeant major and had several other leadership opportunities in training soldiers and managing logistics.

“The department is not just committed, but also passionate about serving our veterans by helping them improve their employment situation,” said Jon Pierpont, executive director of Workforce Services. “Michael has this same commitment and passion. I have full confidence in his ability to seamlessly carry on the great work being done for Utah veterans.”

In addition to his military experience, Miller has served on several community boards including Cedar City Hospital Board, Utah National Guard Charitable Trust Board and Cedar City Animal Adoption Committee. Since retiring from the military, Miller has been working for the Bureau of Land Management as an administrative support specialist.

“I am deeply humbled and honored to have been selected for this position and serve on the Department of Workforce Services team, a team that is committed to excellence and service,” said Miller. “I look forward to the challenge and the many great opportunities to continue serving our veterans, their families and the great state of Utah.”

Miller will begin working for Workforce Services on Monday, November 5, 2018. He will work closely with Summers for the next couple months until Bruce retires at the beginning of the year.
