Workforce Services appoints new Workforce Development Division director

SALT LAKE CITY (May 14, 2019) — The Department of Workforce Services has selected Loggins Merrill as the new Workforce Development Division director. Merrill will be responsible for the oversight and administration of programs assisting Utah’s job seekers in 32 employment centers around the state and at jobs.utah.gov.

In 19 years with the department, Merrill has amassed a broad range of experience as an assistant director, manager, supervisor, auditor, contract monitor and eligibility worker. Prior to his current role as Assistant Director of the Workforce Development Programs and Training Division, Merrill managed both the South County and Metro employment centers, overseeing more than 50 staff serving more than 2,400 customers each week. He also led the development of the Dignity of Work program designed to help people experiencing homelessness find gainful employment as part of Operation Rio Grande.

“Loggins has extensive experience with a wide variety of our programs and services, putting him in a great position to lead the Workforce Development Division,” said Jon Pierpont, Department of Workforce Services executive director. “We value his knowledge of our programs, strong connections in the community and proven ability to connect with customers.”

Merrill received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in 2018 for his efforts in Operation Rio Grande and 2014 Statewide Community Connection Award for partnerships in the homeless community and implementation of employment services in shelters.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity and look forward to working with our partners statewide and with the wonderful staff here at Workforce Services,” said Merrill. “We have so many great services and opportunities to help people improve their lives, and we will continue to coordinate with communities and partners in multiplying that positive impact.”
