Basic Information About SNAP Benefits

You might be eligible to get help paying for food through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. To find out for sure, you'll need to talk to an eligibility specialist who specializes in figuring out if people qualify.

You can apply for SNAP today. The sooner you apply, the sooner you can get help, because your benefits start on the day you apply.

How to Apply

  • Apply online: The easiest way to apply is online at jobs.utah.gov/mycase
  • Apply in person: You can also go to an employment center to apply.
  • Mail an application: We can mail you an application, but be aware that if you choose this option, it might take longer and could delay your benefits.

You don't need any documents when you first turn in your application.

You might be able to get SNAP benefits within seven days if you qualify for something called "expedited service." If you do qualify for faster service, the only thing you'll need to show is your identity.

You can even turn in an application that isn't completely filled out, as long as it has your name, address and signature. However, you'll need to fill out the rest of the application before we can figure out if you qualify for SNAP.

What SNAP Offers

SNAP helps you get healthy food. Most families will still need to use some of their own money along with their SNAP benefits to buy all the food they need.

Other Programs that Can Help

If there's a pregnant woman or a child, age five or younger, in your home, another program called WIC (Women, Infant, and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program) might also be able to help with food and teach you about healthy eating. You can call your local Health Department or visit WIC online to learn more.

How Much SNAP Assistance Will You Receive?

The amount of food stamps you get each month is called an allotment. How much you get depends on how many people are in your household and how much money your household earns each month.
