I am not a United States citizen. Can I get SNAP (Food Stamps), Financial Assistance, Child Care or Medicaid in Utah?

You may be eligible if you meet the qualified non-citizen criteria for the program. Generally, this includes Lawful Permanent Residents (green card holders), We will review if you meet qualified status at the time of application. You will have to show proof of your income, assets, and meet all other eligibility criteria for each program.

Can my kids get benefits even if I don't have U.S. immigration documents?

Yes, U.S. citizen children and children who meet qualified non-citizen criteria for a program may obtain benefits when eligible, even if their parents are not U.S. citizens or qualified non-citizens. You will have to show proof of your income, assets and meet all other eligibility criteria for each program.

Will receiving benefits on behalf of my children make it harder to get a green card or become a citizen?

Receiving public benefits does not automatically make an individual a “public charge.” USCIS released the latest guidance on making Public Charge inadmissibility determination. For details, visit:

Can children who don't have U.S. immigration documentation get SNAP, Financial Assistance, Child Care or Medicaid?

In most cases, children who cannot provide proof of a qualified immigration status will not be eligible for benefits. Individuals with an emergency medical need may be eligible to receive Medicaid coverage for that emergency, if they meet all other eligibility criteria.

Is information about sponsorship required as a component of applying for SNAP, Financial Assistance, Child Care or Medicaid?

Yes, it may be required for you to provide sponsorship information to determine your eligibility for the programs you have applied for. Each program has different sponsorship requirements which will be determined at the time of application.
