Requirements
There are some things that determine if you can get SNAP benefits.
Work Requirements:
- Employment and Training (E&T) program: Most adults who can work will need to meet certain work requirements. This includes registering for work, and in some cases, participating in an E&T plan.
- Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWD): There are special rules for adults who are able to work and don't have age qualified children or other dependents.
Quitting a Job or Cutting Hours: If you quit your job or reduce your work hours, it could affect your SNAP benefits. (You can read the policy here.)
Students between the ages of 18 and 49 may be able to receive SNAP if they meet certain requirements.
ESAP: The Elderly Simplified Application Process
This program makes it easier for people who are elderly or have a disability to get and keep their benefits. With ESAP, your benefits are approved for a three-year period, and you only need to complete one interview when you first apply.
You don't have to be a U.S. citizen to get SNAP. Many non-citizens can also qualify.
Money and Things You Own (Income and Asset Limits)
There are limits on how much money you can earn and how much you own (like money in the bank) to be eligible for SNAP. We'll look at your household's income and what you own to see if you qualify.
